January 20, 2018 | Track & Field
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With 16 runners surpassing their previous collegiate best marks, Saturday saw the Bulldog track athletes turn in some of the best work of their careers. Alicia Viveros also added a new personal best mark in the women's shot put.
MSU got out to a hot start in the first event of the day with all four runners in the unseeded women's 3K setting personal best times. The success continued as State claimed 18 Top 10 finishes.
"Last year, we came here and had an unbelievable meet with 30-something PRs," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "For this to be our second meet, with the weather we've had, to say all that, this was another unbelievable week for us."
Marco Arop won the men's 800m with a time of 1:48.21 which is the second-fastest mark in the country this season and the second-best indoor time in school history. The Bulldog men finished first, third, fifth and eighth in the event.
On the women's side, Monica Mosley won the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.45 seconds. Tiffany Flynn followed her with an eighth-place finish (8.38). Flynn had the fastest time in the prelims, but was pulled out of the finals to compete in the triple jump where she took second with a mark of 12.95m (42-6.0).
But the distance runners truly shone. In addition to the four PRs in the women's 3K, three Bulldog women set new marks in the mile, including Mia Meydrich who finished fifth (4:48.33). Charlotte Cayton-Smith's 800m time was a personal best and took first place. On the men's side, Aaron Phelps set a new career-best in the mile, and Stephen Jones turned in his best time in the 3K.
"We've had a good weekend," distance coach Houston Franks said. "We were supposed to have that, but we got a few huge PRs."
MSU's men finished second and fourth in the 4x400m relay, while the women earned fifth place.
