STARKVILLE, Miss. – Becoming comfortable being uncomfortable.
That is something that the 14th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (2-0) needed on Friday as it rallied to defeat reigning American Athletic Conference champion South Florida (0-1) 5-2.
"I was really happy with all the guys and how we competed," head coach Matt Roberts said. "It was a good day for us to get that belief when we face adversity. South Florida competed really hard today. (Florian Broska) was just unbelievable today. We needed him to have a good day and he was really good in doubles. To see him step up and play that clean in singles was huge for us because he's a very talented freshman that will be key for us down the stretch."
Doubles action went right down to the wire to start off the day. On court 2, State's duo of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic won their second straight match in dominant fashion, winning 6-2 against USF's Sean Burnette and Pierre Luquet. On court 1, USF evened it up when Alberto Barroso-Campos and Grayson Goldin upset State's 49th-ranked tandem of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey, taking a 6-3 decision.
Court 3 was the deciding factor for the doubles point, as MSU's 41st-ranked pair of Florian Broska and Giovanni Oradini battled from down 5-3 to force a tiebreaker before dropping the hard-fought match to the Bulls duo of Peter Bertran and Jakub Wojcik 7-6(5). USF led 1-0.
In singles, State picked up a pair of quick points when No. 118 Niclas Braun posted a solid 6-1, 6-2 victory against Burnette followed by Broska's 6-2, 6-0 triumph against Wojcik.
State's third-ranked Borges then put State up 3-1 with his eight-straight win of 2017-18 by defeating Goldin 6-3, 6-2. Nearly 30 minutes would elapse before the Bulldogs would seal the deal, with nip-and-tuck battles playing out on courts 2, 3 and 6.
MSU junior Trevor Foshey picked up his second dual match victory of the year with a hard-fought, match-clinching 6-3, 6-4 win against Luquet on court 6.
The 29th-ranked Bulldog Oradini dropped the lone singles match, falling in a tight 6-4, 7-5 decision to Barroso-Campos on court 2.
To round out the day, MSU's 54th-ranked Rakic gave State its fifth point of the afternoon by winning a three-set thriller against Bertran at No. 3 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
With the win, State improved to 4-2 in the series against USF, including 2-0 in Starkville. The win also marks the Bulldogs' 16th-straight non-conference victory at Pitts. Under Roberts, the Bulldogs are now 20-1 in home non-SEC matches.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs will return to the court Sunday at noon to face ACC foe Miami. Admission to the match and all regular-season home matches at the Pitts Tennis Centre is free.
