No. 14 Bulldogs Earn Third-Consecutive Win Sunday Against Miami

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Different opponent, similar outcome.
The 14th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (3-0) faced a 1-0 deficit for the second straight match after doubles play. However, like the last time, the Bulldogs pulled together to earn five singles victories and down visiting Miami (1-2) 5-2 Sunday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
"Today was a great match in front of a great crowd to finish off our first three home matches," fourth-year head coach Matt Roberts said. "Our guys really enjoyed playing in front of such engaged fans today. This was a match that you feel good about because all six courts were competing so well. For them to come back out (after doubles), together as a team, and compete so hard on all six courts was huge for us."
To lead off the day in doubles action, State's duo of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic gave the Bulldogs a quick advantage with a 6-2 victory against Miami's Nile Clark and Tatsuki Shimamoto at the No. 2 position. The Hurricanes evened things up moments later when MSU's No. 49 pair of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey dropped a 6-1 decision to Bojan Jankulovski and Adria Soriano on court 1.
Court 3 was once again a thriller, as the 41st-ranked Bulldog tandem of Florian Broska and Giovanni Oradini battled back from down 5-3 to go up 6-5. The Hurricanes' Dane Dunlap and Christian Langmo would force a tiebreak and eventually take it and the match to give Miami an early 1-0 lead at the intermission.
MSU's third-ranked Nuno Borges picked up his 10th win of the year and ninth-straight victory with a solid 6-4, 6-3 win against the 78th-ranked Langmo on court 1 to knot the score up at 1-1. Since his lone loss of the year on Oct. 6, the reigning SEC Player of the Year has not dropped a set.
The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead less than 10 minutes later when two Bulldogs fought valiantly to close out tight second sets for victories. Foshey earned a 6-2, 7-5 win against UM's Shimamoto at No. 6. A few seconds later, the 118th-ranked Braun notched a 6-3, 6-4 win versus Dunlap at the No. 4 position.
With Miami continuing to battle, nearly an hour passed before the Bulldogs would finally clinch the victory, with the final three matches of the day all going three sets.
The MSU rookie Broska ultimately dropped a hard-fought three-setter to Miami's Niclas Genovese on court 5 and MSU led 3-2. MSU's No. 29 Oradini then finished off an inspired comeback after dropping his first set at No. 2 to seal the win for the Maroon and White, notching a 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-2 triumph over UM's Soriano to put the Bulldogs on top for good. Oradini's win marked his team-best 16th victory.
In the final match on court 3, the 54th-ranked Bulldog Rakic staged a similar rally after dropping his first set against Miami's No. 71 Jankulovski. The Serbian took the second set 7-5 and handily won the final set by a 6-1 mark.
With the win, State moves to 6-4 in the series against the Hurricanes, having won six out of the last seven meetings. Under Roberts, the Bulldogs are now 21-1 at home against non-SEC foes and have won 17 consecutive non-conference matches at Pitts.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs will hit the road for the first time this season to Stillwater, Okla., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. There, the Maroon and White will square off against Wisconsin at 9 a.m. CT on Jan. 27 before facing either host No. 15 host Oklahoma State or Kentucky the following day. The team that wins two matches at the event will qualify for ITA National Indoor Championships held Feb. 16-19 in Seattle, Wash.
