January 13, 2018 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Following a very successful fall campaign, the Mississippi State men's tennis team is set to begin its 2018 dual match slate on Sunday.
The 14th-ranked Bulldogs will host UAB at 1 p.m. Sunday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre in the season lid lifter for both squads. Admission to the match and all home regular-season MSU tennis matches is free.
"UAB always has a solid team and we are ready for a good match," fourth-year head coach Matt Roberts said. "Team matches are the most fun for the guys so they are excited that the spring season is finally here. It will be a great match to get the spring season underway."
State junior Nuno Borges, the 2017 SEC Player of the Year, enters the season ranked third nationally after finishing the fall on a six-match win streak. The All-American heads up a quartet of Bulldogs currently in the ITA singles rankings. Sophomore Giovanni Oradini (29th), and juniors Strahinja Rakic (54th) and Niclas Braun (118th) round out the ranked singles players for MSU.
The sophomore lefty Oradini leads the Bulldogs with 14 victories thus far in 2017-18, with 10 of those wins coming against nationally-ranked opponents in the fall.
On the doubles side, State fields a pair of ranked duos. Oradini and freshman Florian Broska lead the Bulldogs at 41st nationally while the tandem of Braun and Trevor Foshey come in at 49th.
MSU ended 2017 ranked 18th nationally, making the program's 26th appearance all-time in the NCAA Championship and advancing to the title match of the SEC Championship.
