STARKVILLE, Miss. – Despite temperatures in the mid-30s, the Mississippi State men's tennis team got its 2018 spring campaign off to a roaring start, sweeping UAB 7-0 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Sunday.
The 14th-ranked Bulldogs (1-0) rallied to earn the doubles point against the challenging Blazers (0-1) and rode that momentum through singles action.
"Doubles was very good for us to get more comfortable being uncomfortable," fourth-year head coach Matt Roberts said. "UAB pushed us in doubles. In singles, every court was at a very good level. I thought UAB fought hard and pushed us. I feel like we went through something today and built that trust with each other just a little bit more moving forward to our next matches."
In doubles, the Bulldogs came back to take the opening point of the day after being down on all three courts. UAB got a quick advantage when its pair of Anru Fourie and Kenton Parton upset State's 41st-ranked Florian Broska and Giovanni Oradini 6-2 at the No. 3 position, but the Bulldogs would not go down without a fight.
MSU's pair of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic battled back to take a 7-5 victory on court 2, with the Bulldog's 49th-ranked tandem of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey clinching the doubles point with a triumph by the same score at No. 1.
Reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Nuno Borges rang in the 2018 season with his seventh-straight victory by soundly defeating UAB's Tim Dollman 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. In Borges' seven-match win streak, all seven triumphs have come in straight-set fashion.
MSU's Foshey then earned his second victory of the day by downing Nikolai Manchev 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. The 54th-ranked Rakic clinched the match for the Bulldogs on court 3, taking a 6-1, 7-5 decision against UAB's Parton.
At the No. 4 position, State's 118th-ranked Braun emerged victorious with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 victory. MSU's No. 29 Oradini won his team-leading 15th match of the season by also taking a 6-2, 6-4 decision, ousting Blazer Stefan Gonzalez at No. 2.
The final Bulldog win came when MSU rookie Florian Broska overcame dropping the first set to force and win a third-set super-tiebreaker on court 5, defeating UAB's Fourie 5-7, 6-2, 1-0(9).
With the win, State improved to 28-1 all-time against UAB and has won 20 matches in a row against the Blazers. In home openers, the Bulldogs have now won 14-straight and are 40-8 since 1969.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs will retake the court at 1 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 19, against South Florida before hosting Miami on Sunday, Jan. 21. Admission to both matches at the Pitts Tennis Centre is free.
