MSU Sweeps Louisiana Tech On Labor Day
September 04, 2017 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – It might have been Labor Day, but Mississippi State put in all the hard work en route to sweeping Louisiana Tech at Newell-Grissom, 3-0.
The game marked seven years to the day since the teams last met, as MSU went on to win in three (25-20, 25-15, 25-17) to keep its all-time record against Tech unblemished at 9-0.
"Our support staff is awesome. Louisiana Tech needed a game; the storm messed them up," third-year coach David McFatrich said."They were supposed to head to Texas, and they couldn't go. The Louisiana Tech coach is a buddy of mine. He needed a game, and I asked the support staff to come in on their day off, and they did it. Louisiana Tech is a good team, a well-coached team."
The Bulldogs (5-3) started the game with a 25-20 victory in set one. Despite some early attack errors, State went on to gain a six-point lead in the middle of the set. Khristian Carr had four kills and Gabby Zgunda had five digs.
The second set involved a kills battle for the Dawgs as they racked up a 10-point run winning 25-10. Jelena Vujcin and Sara Maddox recorded multiple kills to help secure the victory.
The third set featured a lot of back and forth play for each team with multiple rallies taking place. Ultimately, State held Tech to only 17 points and won the match in three.
On Thursday, MSU travels to Houston for the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup. On Friday, the Bulldogs will play McNeese State at 10 a.m. and Stetson at 5 p.m. Mississippi State is back in action on Saturday facing off against Houston at 12:30 p.m. and Louisiana at 7:30 p.m. to close out the tournament.
