MSU Splits Day Two Of Bulldog Invitational
September 01, 2017 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – During day two of the Bulldog Invitational, MSU brought a lot of fight and energy to the court, but split the day at Newell-Grissom.
Â
Both games were decided in three sets as MSU won the first game against South Florida (25-23, 25-20, 25-22) and lost the second to Tulane (25-17, 25-17, 25-19).
"We have to be more process-oriented than goal-oriented," third-year coach David McFatrich said. "I do not like it when we give up that many points. Tulane played very well, but we have to do a better job on our side of the ball controlling and playing confidently. We just didn't have a lot of confidence today, and it affected us. We will get better. We have to brush this one off and get ready to go tomorrow morning."
During the first set, the Bulldogs never trailed once. Khristian Carr earned four kills and led the team with 4.5 points. In addition to MSU's 4.0 blocks, the team capitalized on USF's 12 errors to win, 25-23.
Â
Set two was similar to the opener, as another kills battle appeared on the court. State tallied 15 kills and 13 digs to secure their 25-20 win over the Bulls.
Â
In the final set of the game for the Bulldogs, three back-to-back kills secured the 25-22 win. MSU had 3.0 blocks and a total of 12 kills.
Â
For the final match of the evening, Mississippi State's toughest match came from Tulane. Out of the gate, MSU struggled to catch up to the Green Wave's lead. Tulane won, 25-17.
Â
Much can be said the same for the second set, as Tulane gained another lead early on. However, the Bulldogs battled it out to tie the score at 11-11 before the Green Wave claimed the set, 25-17.
Â
The Bulldogs came out fighting during the third set as both teams battled it out staying within one point of each other for the majority of the game. MSU fought back the hardest during the third set before falling 25-19.
Â
MSU battles Stephen F. Austin tomorrow at 9 a.m. The Bulldog Invitational will come to a close in the early afternoon.
