August 31, 2017 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State was impressive in its home debut Thursday, defeating Grambling, 3-0, in front of a raucous crowd to kick-off the Bulldog Invitational.
Â
Collectively, the team earned 48 kills and 57.0 points. Through all three sets, MSU never trailed and now stands at 3-1 on the young season.
Â
"I thought it was a good job by our players," third-year coach David McFatrich said. "Grambling is trying to feel their way around things too, but Coach Demetria is doing a good job with them. I think they will have similar success this year. We are just trying to get better every time we go on the court."
Â
The opening set was quick for the Bulldogs as they took an early lead to begin the game. Morgan Kath had 18 assists that helped the team earn 18 kills. Khristian Carr paced MSU with six kills as ultimately, the Bulldogs won 25-13.
Â
During set two, the beginning was a back and forth kills battle. MSU started to pull away thanks to its 19 kills, paving the way for the Bulldogs' 25-16 victory.
Â
In the game deciding third set, Carr again ignited a spark with five kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Communication was the biggest factor as the team held the Tigers to their lowest point total of the match at 12.
Â
"We have a good chance this weekend with South Florida," McFatrich said. "They are good, and they have a couple of heavy arms on their team, so we will be pushed in that one for sure. Then we have Tulane, and they are a very good team and very well-coached."
Â
The Bulldog Invitational continues tomorrow with South Florida and Stephen F. Austin battling at 10 a.m. Mississippi State will be back in action at 2 p.m. CT against South Florida and at 7 p.m. CT against Tulane.
