Dorney Penalty Kick Propels MSU Past Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. โ Kelly Dorney knew the direction in which her opponent was going to go when she lined up for a penalty kick.

That knowledge paid off, as her try flew past the Louisiana Tech goalkeeper to help the Mississippi State soccer team (3-0) defeat the Lady Techsters (2-1-1), 1-0, on Thursday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

"I want to give Louisiana Tech a lot of credit tonight," MSU coach Tom Anagnost said. "They are a tough team with several dangerous players that caused us problems. I'm proud of our kids because they stuck with it and found a way to win on the road, which is never easy."

The first half ended with a scoreless tie.

Dorney broke that tie in the 84th minute when she fired a penalty kick past LA Tech goalkeeper Courtney Tompkins. It was her first goal of the season.

"It is a great feeling," Dorney said of the win. "Road victories are often harder than home victories. We kept them scoreless and then scored when we needed to. It was a great win."

State outshot the Lady Techsters 16-6, with eight shots being on target.

Catalina Perez worked the full 90 minutes in net for her third win of the year and collected a pair of saves.

The Bulldogs will return home to host Central Arkansas on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m., where it will be International Students' Day and free pizza will be served to international students along with free ice cream for fans in attendance.
