Early Goals Lift MSU To Sunday Shutout

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Six minutes.

That's how long it took for the Mississippi State soccer team (4-0) to score two of its three goals in a 3-0 win against Central Arkansas (1-3) on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field.

"It was a good overall team performance from our players," coach Tom Anagnost said. "The early goals helped us a lot. If we can mimic that, there are some good thoughts amongst our staff as to where we could go."

State began its scoring on a goal by MaKayla Waldner on a Gabriella Coleman corner kick in the fourth minute. It was Waldner's second goal of the year.

Less than two minutes later, Courtney Robicheaux took a clearance from Catalina Perez all the way to an empty Central Arkansas net for her first goal of 2017.

In the 55th minute, State got its third goal of the afternoon on an own goal. Carly Mauldin's shot attempt was blocked by the defender, but went straight into the goal to put the Bulldogs up 3-0.

The Maroon and White outshot UCA 18-7 and outcornered the Bears 7-3.

Perez went the distance in net for her fourth win of the year and her third shutout of the season. The Boca Raton, Fla., native has allowed just one goal in four matches.

"The defense is playing very well," Perez said. "They're making my job easier. It's really fun to play with these girls and for these coaches."

The Bulldogs continue their home stretch with two more home matches next weekend. On Friday, Sept. 1, State will host Houston at 7 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. match against Colgate on Sunday, Sept. 3.

Friday's match is a "Maroon Friday Maroon-Out" and free Maroon Friday shirts will be given out. Also, fans will have an opportunity to win tickets to Saturday's football season opener against Charleston Southern.

On Sunday, State's 10 seniors will be honored at the match for Senior Day. Fans will also be treated to a maroon stadium cup giveaway.
