MSU Opens Season At SMU Doubletree Invitational
August 24, 2017 | Volleyball
Dallas – There will be few friendly faces when Mississippi State opens its 2017 campaign, as the Bulldogs travel to Dallas for the SMU DoubleTree Invitational, set to begin Friday.
MSU is scheduled to play twice on Friday, first against SMU followed by a showdown with Texas A&M Corpus-Christi.
It's been almost 20 years since SMU and MSU have played, with SMU leading the series 1-0. The Dawgs are 1-0 again Texas A&M CC, with the lone meeting coming in 2010.
"We're looking forward to playing somebody else other than ourselves," third-year MSU coach David McFatrich said. "I think it's going to be a good tournament. We have our work cut out for us because these are really good teams. Two of the three teams made the NCAA tournament last year, so we know it's going to be tough; but we look forward to seeing stiff competition. It will only make us better."
Last season, the Bulldogs were 2-1 after opening weekend.
Scouting the Mustangs
The Mustangs have four starters returning, including Katie Hegarty, AVCA All-Region honoree, and Kendall Patterson, ACC Freshman of the Year.
Hegarty and Patterson were both named to The American All-Preseason team. Patterson led the league with 10.95 assists per set, and Hegarty ranked fifth in the league in 2016 with 461 kills.
Scouting the Islanders
Heading into the season, the Islanders are back-to-back Southland Conference champions. Texas A&M CC also has five starters returning, including Brittany Gilpin with 403 kills and Madison Fitzsimmons with 98 blocks.
MSU will face off against SMU, Texas A&M Corpus-Christi and Rice during the two-day tournament. The games against SMU and Texas A&M CC will be played at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The final game for the team against Rice will be on Saturday at 12 p.m.
