STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the final tune-up before the 2017 opener this weekend, Maroon claimed a 3-1 victory at the annual Maroon and White scrimmage at Newell-Grissom.

Both teams displayed a number of moves on Monday night as fans were able to get their first look at the 2017 Mississippi State volleyball program.

"I thought we did some good things tonight. We tried to mix it up and make the teams as even as possible, and I think we did a good job at doing that," third-year coach David McFatrich said. "As you would expect, we have a lot of things to work on. I think when we controlled the ball and ran the routes we were supposed to run we had some good connections."

Maroon won set one, 25-13, while White rallied to take set two, 25-22. Then in a back-and-forth affair, only a few points were the difference in Maroon taking set three, 25-21.

The Maroon squad was ultimately victorious as it won the fourth set of the evening, 15-11.

Standouts on the court were freshmen Laura Rose Gray and Sara Maddox. Gray had 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .550. Maddox also had 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .230.

"The effort was there. The heart was there. We just have to get better on the execution," McFatrich said.

On Wednesday, the team travels to Dallas to participate in the SMU Doubletree Invitational. The first serve for the Bulldogs is set for Friday, Aug. 25 at 12:30 p.m.
