State Set To Take On Memphis In Final Exhibition

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Looking to bounce back after dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 7 Florida on Wednesday, Mississippi State will welcome a familiar foe to the MSU Soccer Field on Friday.
The Bulldogs will host Memphis in their final exhibition contest of the season. The match will mark the fourth-straight year the two teams have met in exhibition play, with State winning the last three meetings.
MSU coach Tom Anagnost expects coach Brooks Monaghan's Tigers to be a new challenge for his squad, as Memphis made the NCAA Tournament last season.
"Memphis is a great team," Anagnost said. "Brooks has done such a wonderful job there. They are a perennial NCAA team that will present a very different, difficult test for us. We expect our team to not make as many as the same mistakes and improve from the last performance."
Last season, the Maroon and White weathered a torrential downpourto claim a 3-0 shutout against the Tigers on goals by Carly Mauldin, Payton Gruenewald and McKenna de Graaf.
Scouting the Tigers
The Tigers were recently picked to win the American Athletic Conference by the league's coaches, garnering five of the nine possible first place votes. Memphis also had three players voted to the preseason all-conference team.
Memphis returns eight starters and two of its top three scorers from last year, led by Jessica Lisi, who scored six times last season en route to helping the Tigers to its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance.
Match time is set for 7 p.m. and admission is free.
After facing Memphis, MSU will host Stephen F. Austin to open its regular season at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Aug. 18 at the MSU Soccer Field. The match is free to the public and will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
