Olivia Hernandez netted the lone goal for the Bulldogs that proved to be enough for the win
Hernandez Header Propels MSU To Exhibition Win
August 11, 2017 | Soccer
Starkville, Miss. – One goal was all it took.
Mississippi State only needed an Olivia Hernandez header in the 31st minute to down Memphis 1-0 in an exhibition bout at the MSU Soccer Field on Friday night.
MSU has now beaten the Tigers four straight times—all in exhibition play.
State coach Tom Anagnost was excited about the steps his team has made over the past two exhibition outings.
"I thought we made a good step forward today," Anagnost said. "I thought our women did a lot of good things compared to our last game. We had some kids show more pride in what we were doing and more fight. It showed on the field."
Hernandez's goal came on an assist from Mallory Eubanks in the second of three 30-minute periods.
"It was really excited and amazing," Hernandez said of her score. "Mallory is a great player and she can beat anyone one-on-one so once you see her go down the line you have to be ready."
State outshot the Tigers 11-3 and limited them to no shots on goal. Catalina Perez went the distance in goal to pick up the win.
The Bulldogs will open the season on Friday, Aug. 18 against Stephen F. Austin. First kick at the MSU Soccer Field is set for 7 p.m. and fans are encouraged to help the Bulldogs set a new single-game attendance record. Admission is free. The match will be streamed live on SEC Network+ via WatchESPN or the WatchESPN app.
