Mississippi State Volleyball tips on Aug. 25 in Dallas
MSU's Volleyball Schedule Features 16 Home Matches
July 26, 2017 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Year 3 of the David McFatrich era officially begins on Aug. 25 when his volleyball team travels to Dallas to compete in the SMU Doubletree Invitational.
The Bulldogs, coming off a 14-18 campaign, open with the Mustangs before closing out the tournament against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Rice in the two-day event.
They then make their home debut in the Bulldog Invitational on Aug. 31 against Grambling State before closing out against South Florida, Tulane and Stephen F. Austin.
Mississippi State will also play in Houston at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup Sept. 8-9 against McNeese State, Stetson and Houston before hosting Jackson State, North Texas and Southeastern Louisiana Sept. 15-16 at the Maroon Classic.
"It's getting tougher to host tournaments in the fall, so we're grateful to be able host twice," McFatrich said. "It's pretty rare these days in college volleyball to be able to host a tournament on a football weekend. I'm thankful to all our media, promotion, and operations staff who help make it happen. Our players get a break from travel and get to participate in one of the greatest environments in sport — Mississippi State football."
In total, MSU plays 32 matches, 16 at Newell-Grissom. Under McFatrich, the team is 21-12 (.636) at home. Under his tutelage, MSU has won 10 home games back-to-back for the first time school history.
"I'm really looking forward to getting into the gym with this group," McFatrich said. "We have four returners and nine newcomers, including Sara Maddox, a freshman who joined us in January."
"I like our pre-SEC conference schedule because it will test us immediately. We head to SMU the first weekend, and they were an NCAA tournament team last year and beat our SEC opponent Texas A&M in the first round. I think it's good to be pushed right out of the gate."
The Bulldogs open the 2017 SEC slate on Friday, Sept. 22 at home against South Carolina before heading to Knoxville to face Tennessee on Sept. 24. MSU then hosts Ole Miss and Kentucky, it begins a three-game road swing at LSU (Oct. 6), Texas A&M (Oct. 8) and 2016 SEC Co-Champion Missouri (Oct. 13).
Mississippi State then returns home to face Georgia on Oct. 15 before heading to Arkansas on Oct. 22. The Bulldogs will then finish out the month of October hosting Alabama and 2016 SEC Co-Champion Florida.
During the month of November, the Bulldogs will travel to four of the seven remaining matches, starting in Athens, Ga. against Georgia (Nov. 3) before traveling to Ole Miss (Nov. 5).
A pair of matches brings the team back to The Griss to welcome LSU (Nov. 10) and Missouri (Nov. 17). The team then travels to Auburn Tigers on Nov. 19 before returning home to play the final home matchup of the season against Texas A&M on Nov. 22. The regular season concludes at South Carolina on Nov. 24.
"Once again, the SEC is going to be very strong," McFatrich said. "From top to bottom, it's as tough as it gets. But it's a challenge we are all looking forward to."
