No. 16 MSU Women’s Tennis Falls At No. 1 Florida
April 09, 2017 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Despite putting up a big fight at several positions with No. 1 Florida (20-1, 10-1 SEC) Sunday, the 16th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (13-7, 6-6 SEC) ultimately fell in a 7-0 decision on the road.
Florida came out strong in doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. On court 3, UF's 33rd-ranked Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock defeated MSU's Madison Harrison and Sara Lizariturry 6-2. To clinch the doubles point, Florida's 16th-ranked Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan retired State's Jennifer Brown and Khrystyna Vozniak by the same score at the No. 2 position.
The remaining match would be suspended with the fifth-ranked Bulldog pair of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux leading the Gators' 18th-ranked Anna Danilina and Ingrid Neel 4-3.
Despite State building several early leads in singles, UF's deep singles lineup (all six players in the top 60 nationally) would rally to maintain its momentum, ultimately taking all six of the first sets.
On court 3, UF's No. 12 Kuhlman downed State's Harrison 6-0, 6-0 to extend the home lead to 2-0. Following on court 4, Florida's No. 29 Danilina held off MSU's Anastasia Rentouli to grab the first set and go on to win 6-4, 6-0 to put UF up 3-0.
To clinch the match, the Gators' 13th-ranked Woolcock overpowered the Maroon & White's 18th-ranked Lee 6-3, 6-1 on court 1, clinching the 4-0 victory for UF. It also ended Lee's six-match winning streak in singles.
The remaining three matches were played out and all were claimed by Florida.
At the No. 6 position, UF's No. 60 Spencer Liang ousted MSU's Lizariturry 6-2, 6-4. On court 2, Florida's No. 25 Neel held off State's Rioux 6-1, 7-6(12). The Gators' 37th-ranked Keegan outlasted the Bulldogs' Vozniak 7-6(3), 6-4 on court 5.
