COLUMBIA, S.C – Starting off a three-match road stretch, the 16th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (13-6, 6-5 SEC) fell to the 13th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks (15-6, 6-4 SEC) in a 4-1 decision Friday.
The Bulldogs put up a fight in doubles as MSU's fifth-ranked Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux made quick work of USC's Caroline Dailey and Ingrid Gamarra Martins 6-1 on court 1. The Gamecocks would respond by taking the remaining two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.
On court 3, USC's Hadley Berg and Rachel Rohrabacher retired State's Madison Harrison and Sara Lizariturry 6-2. Following on court 2, Gamecocks Paige Cline and Brigit Folland defeated Bulldogs Jennifer Brown and Khrystyna Vozniak 6-3 to clinch the doubles point and put USC out front 1-0.
The homestanding Gamecocks kept their momentum by taking four of the six first sets in singles action.
USC claimed the first match off the court as 54th-ranked Mia Horvit defeated MSU's Rioux 6-1, 6-0 on court 2. The Bulldogs would then get their lone point of the contest as the 18th-ranked Lee overpowered the Gamecocks' 41st-ranked Martins 6-1, 6-2 on court 1 to make it 2-1.
However, USC would respond to take the next two singles matches, clinching the match in the process. On court 6, the Gamecocks' Folland downed MSU's Lizariturry 6-3, 6-2. The clinching victory came at the No. 4 position where USC's Berg retired State's Anastasia Rentouli 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the 4-1 victory.
The remaining two matches were suspended with State's Harrison tied on court 3 (6-1, 4-6, 1-1) and Vozniak trailing 7-6(5), 3-2 at No. 5.
