Pichaikool shoots opening round 69 At Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
Pichaikool Paces MSU On Day One At Old Waverly Collegiate Championship
April 03, 2017 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss – In a tournament cut to 36-holes due to three and half inches of rain on the course overnight, Peng Pichaikool's 3-under-par 69 led the Mississippi State men's golf team to an opening-round 289 on Monday.
MSU is tied for fourth and six shots behind the team leader South Florida heading into Tuesday's final round.
Pichaikool's 69 tied the freshman for third and is his ninth under-par round since his career began in January.
"Today was not our best performance, but the guys played hard and managed to shoot around par," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "Sometimes playing at home can be difficult because you want to play so well that you maybe put a little too much pressure on yourself."
The Bulldog duo of Ross Bell and individual player Garrett Johnson fired identical opening rounds of 71 to sit in a tie for ninth place.
"Peng and Ross continued with their good scoring from last week and led us today," Homan said.
Senior Jackson Dick shot a 73 over the opening 18 to tie him for 24th.
Competing as an Individual, Jacob Ross sits in a tie for 33rd after shooting an opening round 74.
In a tie for 64th place sits Taylor Grant and individual player Austin Rose. The duo both shot 76 during Monday's round.
Rounding out the Maroon and White scorecard, Taylor Bibbs is tied for 72nd after carding an opening round 77.
In his season debut, Johnny Newnham shot a 78 and is tied for 76th.
"A couple of the guys that struggled are playing fine, they just made some costly double bogeys," Homan said. "I have all the confidence that they will bounce back and finish strong tomorrow."
Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong leads the player leaderboard by four shots over the field.
MSU plays its final regular season round on home turf Tuesday with a tee time set for 9:50 a.m. CT. Admission for Tuesday's final round is free and Hail State Rewards members will receive 300 points for attending.
