Pichaikool Finishes T7 At SEC Championship
April 22, 2017 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Freshman phenom Peng Pichaikool continued his strong play on Saturday at the SEC Men's Golf Championship, carding a final-round 65 to finish in a tie for seventh place.
Pichaikool, who joined the program in January, tallied his fourth Top 10 finish of the spring with a 5-under-par 65. His 65 is the best round by a Bulldog golfer at the SEC Championship since Chad Ramey shot a 64 in the final round in 2014.
The Thailand native paced MSU to a final-round 281 and a 14th-place finish in the stroke play portion of the championship.
"Peng added to an already stellar semester with his finish this week, and today he had one of the best ball-striking rounds I've ever seen," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "He played with a pretty severe back injury this week and really fought through a lot of pain."
Ross Bell improved five shots from the second to third round by shooting a 71 to finish in a tie for 50th.
Senior Jackson Dick tied for 57th after cutting seven strokes from his second round with an even-par 70.
Taylor Grant shot a 75 to finish in a tie for 64th.
Rounding out the Bulldog scorecard, freshman Garrett Johnson improved his scoring in every round with a 75 to finish in sole possession of 70th.
"Obviously, this was not the performance we were looking for in the SEC Championship. We did have some good rounds today but it was too little, too late," Homan said. "Hopefully, some of our underclassmen can learn from this tournament and really work hard to improve over the summer and come back more prepared to handle playing in the SEC."
With the introduction of match play, the top eight teams will now advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday. Flordia's Alejandro Tosti beat Vanderbilt's Patrick Martin in a two-hole playoff to claim the individual championship.
