No. 24 Bulldogs Welcome No. 19 LSU On Sunday For Senior Day Showdown
April 01, 2017 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After yet another program first on Friday afternoon, the 24th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (12-5, 5-4 SEC) sets its sights on 19th-ranked LSU (12-5, 5-3 SEC) Sunday as the Bulldogs cap their final regular season home weekend. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. CT start time at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Live video and stats will be available for the match at www.hailstate.com/livewt. Sunday's match will serve as Senior Day as All-American and two-time first-team, All-SEC selection Jasmine Lee will be honored for her time at State.
"Jas is one of the best players to ever play at Mississippi State, undoubtedly the best ever in singles," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "She is so talented and has had a great career here. To have a No. 1 that wins more than she falls is a legit No. 1 in this league. She has made us better these last three years and we appreciate all her efforts. I hope on Sunday we have a good day and do what we are capable of on Senior Day. She has meant the world to this program."
State is looking to carry the momentum from Friday's 4-1 win over No. 25 Texas A&M, which marked the Bulldogs' first win against the Aggies in seven all-time meetings, into Sunday's battle.
The 32nd-ranked Lee improved to 18-5 on the season in singles action and 7-1 in conference play with her win Friday. True freshman Sara Lizariturry notched her 16th singles victory of the season while picking up her fourth conference victory against the Aggies.
Posting her first conference win and first match-clinching victory of 2017, junior Jennifer Brown improved to 2-3 on the season Friday with a tough victory to clinch State's win over the Aggies. Bulldogs Lisa Marie Rioux, Madison Harrison, Anastasia Rentouli and Khrystyna Vozniak round out the lineup for State.
The Bulldogs were also impressive in doubles Friday, claiming 7-5 and 6-2 wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Brown and Vozniak led the way clinching the doubles point by winning four straight games for a 7-5 triumph at No. 2, improving to 2-2 on the season. Lee and Rioux are 20-5 in doubles together this season and are currently ranked 11th nationally.
LSU enters Sunday's match after falling 4-0 to No. 28 Ole Miss in Oxford. The Tigers, however, had won four-straight SEC matches (and five of their last six) prior to that defeat.
In singles, the Tigers are led by three players ranked in the ITA singles rankings - 30th-ranked Jade Lewis, No. 86 Joana Valle Costa and No. 105 Ryann Foster. In doubles, Valle Costa pairs with Foster to form the nation's 20th-ranked doubles tandem.
