No. 33 MSU Closes Home Weekend Against No. 34 Alabama Sunday

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After a tough battle Friday, the 33rd-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (7-2, 0-1 SEC) looks to bounce back against the 34th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (6-5, 0-1 SEC) on Sunday as the Bulldogs cap their SEC opening weekend.
First serve for Sunday's match is slated for 1 p.m. CT at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Live video and stats will be available for the match at www.hailstate.com/livewt.
The Bulldogs are seeking to regain momentum after falling in a tough 6-1 decision to the sixth-ranked Auburn Friday night. The match included two courts that went the distance to three sets and a total of four tiebreakers.
State senior and 73rd-ranked All-American Jasmine Lee provided MSU's lone point with a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 upset over Auburn's 36th-ranked Alizee Michaud. The ranked win for Lee was the 33rd of her career and highest of this season.
In their SEC debuts, freshmen Sara Lizariturry and Lisa Marie Rioux suffered their first losses of the dual-match season in two tough battles against the Tigers. Lizariturry fought back to force a third set but could not overcome AU's Roos van der Zwaan while Rioux fell in a tight affair to Auburn's 99th-ranked Taylor Russo. Rioux (7-1) and Lizariturry (5-1) are second and third on the team respectively in dual-match singles wins.
Bulldogs Madison Harrison, Anastasia Rentouli and Khrystyna Vozniak each dropped close matches Friday as well, contending in a tiebreaker or three-setter in their matches.
Alabama enters Sunday's match after falling in a close 4-3 decision to No. 17 Ole Miss Friday.
In singles, the Crimson Tide is led by 116th-ranked Erin Routliffe who defeated Ole Miss's 35th-ranked Arianne Hartono in three sets Friday. The Tide also pulled off another upset Friday night as Maddie Pothoff upended the Rebels' No. 115 Alexa Bortles in straight sets.
