Pichaikool Powers MSU To Third Place Finish At Lone Star Invitational
March 21, 2017 | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – On a day that was ripe for scoring, freshman Peng Pichaikool fired a 9-under-par 63 to elevate the Mississippi State men's golf team to a third-place finish at the Lone Star Invitational.
Pichaikool's final-round total not only led him into a tie for second-place, but it also equaled the second lowest round in program history. His 54-hole total of 202 tied Alex Rocha's 2000 effort at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate for the fifth-lowest tournament total in history.
As a team, MSU claimed the second-lowest team total for 54 holes with an 837. The Bulldogs' 275 in the final round tied for the fifth-lowest round in school history.
"Peng was phenomenal, and today he put on an absolute show," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "I was really happy with how we played this week. We had some different guys step up and post several under-par rounds."
Sophomore Ross Bell also tallied a career day by rifling a new personal-best 65 that left him tied for 11th.
Texas native Taylor Grant made it a trio of Bulldogs in the Top 15 by carding a final-round 77 to finish tied for 15th.
Jackson Dick wrapped the event in 45th after shooting a 71 over the final 18 holes.
Rounding out the Maroon and White scorecard, Austin Rose shot a 76 to finish in a tie for 51st.
"Ross had his lowest round in competition and played with a lot of consistency," Homan said. "I was pleased with how we responded when we were several under par. We stayed aggressive and that's what you want to see."
Oklahoma, led by individual winner Max McGreevy, won the team title.
MSU will take a week off before hosting the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., on April 3-4.
