Grant has career day in home state.
Grant’s Superb Play Continues At Lone Star Invitational
March 20, 2017 | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Taylor Grant returned to his home state of Texas with authority on Monday, firing a career-low round of 6-under-par 66 to help the Mississippi State men's golf team to sole possession of fifth placing heading into Tuesday's final round at the Lone Star Invitational.
The Abilene, Texas, native shot a 66 in Monday's second round after opening the tournament with a 69. Grant's third- and fourth-consecutive rounds in the 60s put him three shots off individual leader Max McGreevy of Oklahoma in a tie for third.
"We sort of got it going in our second round today and got ourselves back in the tournament after a slow start," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "We have to keep our foot on the gas because the course is really scoreable and we have ground to make up."
Freshman Peng Pichaikool joined Grant in the Top 10, firing a 139 for his opening two rounds to end the day tied for eighth.
Austin Rose sits in a tie for 31st after shooting an opening day 144. Rose answered an opening-round 74 with a 70 for his final 18 holes to give MSU four rounds under-par for the day.
Sophomore Ross Bell heads into Tuesday tied for 38th after finishing his opening two rounds with a 145.
Rounding out the Bulldog scorecard, Jackson Dick sits in a tie for 57th after carding a 148 over his opening 36 holes.
"I was really pleased with our putting," Homan said. "It was nice to see putts go in."
No. 7 Illinois leads the team leaderboard by eight shots.
The Bulldogs begin their final road round of the regular season Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
