Bulldogs rally back from dropping the doubles point to defeat Georgia State 6-1 in Atlanta.
MSU Wins Fifth Straight After Slow Start At Georgia State
February 25, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ATLANTA, Ga. – After dropping the doubles point for only the third time this season, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (7-1) rallied back in singles to defeat the Georgia State Panthers (4-4) by a 6-1 mark, claiming all six singles matches in straight sets.
The victory on Saturday afternoon gives MSU a five-match win streak heading into Southeastern Conference play next week.
"We battled some tough conditions and a big hitting team today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Georgia State came out swinging and it took us too long to adjust which cost us the doubles point."
The Panthers defended their home courts early as the duo of Damira Muminovic and Kristin Rehse defeated MSU's tandem of Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli 6-4 on court 2. Following close behind on court 3, GSU's Anastasia Grosheva and Daniela Ramirez outlasted the Bulldog pair of Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak 6-4 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point and give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs would claim court 1 as the eighth-ranked tandem of Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win 7-5 over the Panthers' Tarani Kamoe and Arina Taluyenko.
"Jasmine and Lisa did a great job in their comeback win after being down. Unfortunately, we were not able to overcome similar deficits on the other two courts."
Trailing 1-0, the Bulldogs bounced back in singles action as State took all first sets to tilt the scales back in its favor to go on and defeat the reigning Sun Belt Conference Champions. But the Bulldogs would have to battle with the Panthers to win all six courts.
State's 73rd-ranked Lee swiftly defeated the Panthers' Rehse 6-2, 6-3 on court 1 to tie the score 1-1. The Bulldog freshman Lizariturry would follow on court 6, breezing through the second set to setback GSU's Grosheva 6-4, 6-1 to give State its first lead of the day at 2-1.
Continuing the momentum, MSU's Vozniak battled past the Panthers' Muminovic 7-5, 6-3 on court 5 to extend the Bulldog lead to 3-1. After blanking her opponent 6-0 in the first set at the No. 4 position, the Bulldogs' Rentouli held of Georgia State's Lara Vovk to take the match 6-0, 7-5 and clinch the match for MSU at 4-1.
The Maroon and White would claim the remaining two matches as well, as Harrison ousted Georgia State's 123rd-ranked Taluyenko 7-6(0), 6-4 on court 2. MSU's rookie Rioux followed on court 3 winning 6-4, 6-3 over GSU's Ramirez to finish off the 6-1 victory.
"I am very proud of the way we responded in singles," Greenan said. "It is rare to see a team lose the doubles point then comeback and not drop a set in singles. We continue to get better each week and we have overcome adversity to be where we are heading into SEC play."
