STARKVILLE, Miss. – One of the top players in the state of Kansas now calls Starkville home, as Mississippi State volleyball announced the signing of standout Sara Maddox to the program on Thursday.
A four-year letterwinner for coach Patty Phillips at Shawnee Mission East, Maddox is a three-time Kansas 6A All-State honoree that brings a wealth of experience and will make an immediate impact on the Bulldogs' right side attack.
"Sara is a major addition to our program and will provide us some excellent help all over the court, especially on the right side," third-year head coach David McFatrich said. "She comes to us as one of the most highly regarded recruits in the state of Kansas and across the country. I'm looking forward to working with her and helping her develop into one of the best players to put on the Maroon and White."
The Prairie Village, Kan., native was an instrumental part of Shawnee Mission East making an impressive turnaround, going from last in their league her freshman season to a third-place finish at state in her final season.
In her junior season, Maddox tallied 272 kills, 76 digs and 56 blocks en route to helping the Lancers improve their win total by 20 from the previous year. The climb did not stop there, as Shawnee Mission East went from 27-9 to 31-10 in her senior season, completing the turnaround and finishing with the third-place showing in the state playoffs. With 233 kills and 71 blocks, Maddox finished out her career with not just the turnaround to her name, but her third All-Sunflower League and All-State honors.
Over the course of her career, Maddox was named the MaxPrep 6A Player of the Match more than 12 times and landed on the Missouri-Kansas All State Select Team.
On the club scene, Maddox was equally as impressive. Playing for coach Christi Lutman and Performance Volleyball Academy, the star attacker paced PVA to a No. 2 ranking in the USA Junior Open Division Heart of America Region in 2016. Overall, Maddox and PVA finished the year inside the Top 25 nationally, reaching as high as 21st.
Maddox, who will major in business at MSU, is the daughter of Mike and Bonnie Maddox and was born on March 3, 1999 in Lawrence, Kan. She has two siblings, Anderson and Jamie. Her father was a member of the Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball program from 1988-91, while her grandfather played basketball and football at Wichita State.
