No. 24 MSU Women’s Tennis Hosts UL Lafayette Saturday To Kickoff Homestand
February 10, 2017 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After having last week off from competition, the 24th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (2-1) hosts the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (1-3) on Saturday, the match is slated for 11 a.m. CT at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Saturday's match marks the beginning of a four-match homestand for the Bulldogs, as they will also host South Alabama and Alcorn State in a twinbill next Sunday, Feb. 19, and Minnesota Wednesday, Feb. 22, for a midweek match.
Last time out, State split its trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend as the Bulldogs defeated Syracuse before falling to No. 14 host Michigan. Those results came after a 4-0 blanking of UAB to open the 2017 season.
Freshmen Sara Lizariturry and Lisa Marie Rioux look to keep their early-season dual match singles records spotless on Saturday, with each sporting undefeated records (1-0 and 2-0, respectively).
The rookie Rioux pairs with senior Jasmine Lee to form the nation's eighth-ranked doubles tandem. The duo has composed a 2-1 dual match record and are 10-2 overall, with both losses coming to the current second- and third-ranked tandem teams in the nation.
On the singles side, the All-American Lee continues her mainstay in the national rankings, coming in at No. 44 overall this week. She has led MSU at the No. 1 position in dual matches with a 2-1 mark.
Madison Harrison, Anastasia Rentouli and Jennifer Brown have rounded out the strong Bulldog lineup thus far this season.
"We are looking forward to competing again after a week off," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "It is always nice to play in front of a home crowd."
Saturday's match will be the third road contest in as many days for the Ragin' Cajuns. UL Lafayette fell at Northwestern State 4-0 Thursday before falling to Southern Miss 4-0 on Friday. Alexandra Way leads the team at the No. 1 position.
This weekend's contest will be the 21st meeting all-time between the Bulldogs and Ragin' Cajuns. MSU has won the last 19 affairs, including a 4-0 shutout last season in Starkville. MSU is the only SEC foe the Ragin' Cajuns will face this season.
