Jelena Vujcin: Finding Her Home Away From Home
November 08, 2017 | Volleyball
Jelena Vujcin beats her chest and embraces her teammates following a detrimental point for Mississippi State.
These constant moments of hard work and dedication were frequent throughout her two-years at Mississippi State. Vujcin, a Serbian native, has not only led the team across the stat sheets, she has been the spearhead of MSU's energy on the court.
Her roots, though, run deeper than the hardwood floors of Newell-Grissom. Vujcin was raised in the rural city of Becej, Serbia, where volleyball has a trademark for success.
"Eastern Europe is very prominent in volleyball, men's and women's," she said. "Each year they have tremendous success. It's amazing to come from a place where volleyball is so important."
Since the early days of her childhood and throughout high school, Vujcin has never been fearful of a leap of faith. She made the international leap to play at Seattle for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, which would eventually lead her to new opportunities in Starkville.
"I made my own list of what I wanted in a school," she recalled. "I wanted simple living, something that feels like family. This seemed to be a perfect fit."
Vujcin is reminiscent upon her first visit to MSU, as it remains her favorite memory from her career at State. Beaming with childlike joy she says, "from the moment I landed and I saw Coach McFatrich with open arms, I have seen how everyone genuinely loves and cares for each other."
From Day 1, Vujcin's enthusiasm has rocked The Griss. That type of passion is a trait she inherited from her dad, Stevan. He always told her to 'leave your heart on the court,' and that is how she's always played.
Vujcin also gives credit to the ladies on the court for always motivating her to play passionately.
"We always remind ourselves to keep working hard for each other," she said. "Playing for something bigger than yourself will always stay with me."
The geoscience major connected the dots between the Serbian lifestyle and Starkville, which led her to fall in love with the small southern town. She describes the European atmosphere as a laid back, food-centered, and friendly way of life. The love displayed by everyone is what reminds her most of home.
Vujcin's time at State rings true as nothing short of dominant. As she prepares to graduate and move on from the MSU volleyball program, she is left with a family she knows has changed her life in every way.
