
HailState Shuts Out StarkVegas in Game One of Fall World Series

JACKSON, Miss. – In Game One of Mississippi State baseball's Fall World Series from Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, HailState, wearing Maroon, shut out StarkVegas in Black, with a 4-0 win.
Maroon was led by freshman outfielder Josh Hatcher, who went 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and a stolen base on the night.
Three pitchers combined for a shutout for HailState. Sophomore Cole Marsh started and lasted two innings, striking out a pair. Senior Trey Jolly followed him with another couple of innings and allowed just one hit. Junior Spencer Price close the door in the fifth and final inning.
HailState scored its first run in the second inning, as freshman Owen Lovell doubled to score sophomore Dustin Skelton, who walked and moved to second on a sacrifice hit.
The men in maroon scored in every inning after, as junior Jake Mangum scored from second on a throwing error in the third, after a single and his second stolen base of the night. Mangum then drove in Lovell in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Hatcher's closed the scoring with a fifth inning opposite field home run to left field.
Senior Jacob Barton took the mound to start for StarkVegas, and struck out three batters while allowing two hits, two walks and an earned run over two innings. Drew Windham replaced him in the third, and allowed two runs, one unearned, while striking out three. Freshman Zane Stephens collected an inning of work in the fifth, and allowed the Hatcher home run.
HailState will take its 1-0 series lead into Game Two, set to begin at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
