November 10, 2017 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State certainly had its moments Friday night, but every run the Bulldogs had, LSU had an answer.
At Newell-Grissom, the Tigers (18-7, 9-5 SEC) survived a valiant effort from Mississippi State (9-20, 0-14 SEC) and escaped 20-25, 8-25, 21-25.
"Similar to our last match against Ole Miss when we are hitting on all cylinders, we do very well," third-year coach David McFatrich said. "We just didn't play well down the stretch. We have to keep working, and see if we can keep ironing out the wrinkles to get better."
The match started off with a kill from Laura Rose Gray to get things started for the Bulldogs. Jelena Vujcin had 4 kills and 4.0 points. Sara Maddox had 3 kills and 3.0 points, while Payton Harris had 6 digs. MSU came back from a nine-point deficit to get back into the set, but LSU took advantage of errors for a 25-20 victory.
Mississippi State struggled to stop LSU's attack game as the Tigers went on to win set two, 25-8.
MSU was more collected in the third set, as the communication resurfaced. State was able to come back from a nine-point difference to tie the game at 17-all after back-to-back service aces by Tori Passarelli. Khristian Carr had 4 kills and 5.0 points. Maddox had 4 kills and 4.0 points. MSU had 2.0 blocks in the set. A LSU service ace ended it allowing the Tigers to pull away for a 25-21 victory.
