AUBURN, Ala. – On a successful first day of competition, the Mississippi State women's tennis team had a tournament-best four players advance to the Round of 16 in singles at the ITA Southern Regional Championships. One MSU tandem also advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles.

"I am proud of the way we competed today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Our girls are making progress with their games and it definitely showed today. Sara, Ana, Magda and Janina combined for eight singles wins and no losses. The highlight definitely came from our birthday girl, Sara, as she pulled off a nice upset over one of the top 20 recruits in the country. Caroline and Khrystyna both picked up hard-earned wins today rounding out a great day of singles for us. The competition will heat up tomorrow so we will have plenty of opportunities and challenges."

As a 9-16 seed, State rookie Magda Adaloglou posted two straight-set victories against Samford's Elsa Pool 6-4, 6-4, and Alabama's Jacqueline Pelletier 6-4, 6-1. She will face Ole Miss' top-seeded and 17th-ranked Arianne Hartono Saturday at 12 p.m. CT. Also representing MSU as a 9-16 seed, junior Anastasia Rentouli defeated both South Alabama's Maxine Palmen and UAB's Jana Hecking by 6-2, 6-1 marks. She matches up with LSU's sixth-seeded and 64th-ranked Ryann Foster at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday.

The Maroon & White's Janina Braun recorded another set of straight-set victories against Tulane's Elena Muller 6-0, 6-4 and UAB's Megan Bertrands 6-4, 6-2. She meets Samford's Roos van der Zwaan, a 9-16 seed, Saturday at 12 p.m. CT. State's Sara Lizariturry made quick work of Louisiana Lafayette's Floriane Picaut 6-4, 6-0, before knocking off LSU's 9-16 seed Elyse Lavender 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. She will face ULM's fifth-seeded Stefana Andrei at 12 p.m. CT Saturday.

MSU's Khrystyna Vozniak fell to Ole Miss' seventh-seeded Savina Macholova 6-4, 6-0 to open play Friday. In the consolation draw, she battled hard for a 6-7(3), 7-5, 1-0(4) triumph against Samford's Holly Horsfall. She matches up with Alabama's Kimberley Gintrand Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.

In the singles B draw, Bulldog Caroline Kelly was defeated in her opener by Louisiana Monroe's Madalina Grigoriu 6-3, 6-0. In consolation action, Kelly rebounded to oust Samford's Nadine De Villers 6-4, 7-6(1) in a tight battle. She matches up with New Orleans' Yurina Asai in Saturday's quarterfinals.

In the doubles main draw, MSU's tandem of Adaloglou and Braun, a 5-8 seed, held off Louisiana Monroe's Stefana Andrei and Karolina Snita 8-7(6) in first round action. They match up with Samford's van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach Saturday at 8 a.m. CT. The Bulldog duo of Lizariturry and Rentouli fell in a tight battle with Ole Miss' Allie Sanford and Cameron Kriscunas 8-7(5). They will face Troy's Nancy Karaky and Sanae Ohta at 8 a.m. CT Saturday.

The singles finalists and doubles champion of the ITA Southern Regionals advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., Nov. 1-5.
