Braun, Lizariturry Into Quarterfinals At ITA Southern Regionals
October 21, 2017 | Women's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. – After four Bulldogs advanced to the Round of 16 on Friday, the Mississippi State women's tennis team had two players advance to the quarterfinals in singles at the ITA Southern Regional Championships Saturday.
"We had another solid day today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Sara picked up the big highlight for the second day in-a-row with her win over the 61st-ranked player in the nation. She lost a couple of close battles against the girl last year, but showed a higher level of focus and intensity to win the heated battle. Janina picked up the other big win of the day. She played one of her best matches so far this fall and was able to dominate a solid player. Our whole team has been working extremely hard this fall and making nice progress. I look forward to more battles tomorrow."
Continuing her hot streak, MSU sophomore Sara Lizariturry upset Louisiana Monroe's fifth-seeded and 61st-ranked Stefana Andrei 6-4, 7-5 to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals. Also moving on to the quarterfinals, State newcomer Janina Braun made quick work of Samford's 9-16 seed Roos van der Zwaan 6-3, 6-1. The two Bulldogs will face each other in quarterfinal action Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
MSU's 9-16 seed Anastasia Rentouli fell in a close Round of 16 battle to LSU's sixth-seeded and 64th-ranked Ryann Foster 6-4, 7-6(5) Saturday. Ole Miss' top-seeded and 17th-ranked Arianne Hartono defeated the Maroon & White's freshman Magda Adaloglou 6-1, 6-2.
MSU's Khrystyna Vozniak routed Alabama's Kimberley Gintrand 6-3, 7-5 in Saturday's main draw consolation Round of 16. Troy's Nancy Karaky advanced by default against Vozniak in the quarterfinals due to injury.
In singles B draw consolation, Bulldog Caroline Kelly posted a tough come-from-behind victory against New Orleans' Yurina Asai 1-6, 6-0, 1-0(5) in Saturday's quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Kelly was outlasted in another marathon match by New Orleans' Brittany Johnson 6-3, 6-7(6), 1-0(6).
In the doubles main draw, MSU's tandem of Adaloglou and Braun, a 5-8 seed, triumphed against Samford's van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach 8-6 in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the Bulldog duo fell to Ole Miss' top-seeded and sixth-ranked pair of Hartono and Alexa Bortles 8-2.
With Kelly replacing Lizariturry in the main draw doubles consolation bracket, State's duo of Kelly and Rentouli fell to Troy's Karaky and Sanae Ohta 8-4.
The singles finalists and doubles champion of the ITA Southern Regionals advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., Nov. 1-5.
