January 27, 2017 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After its sixth-straight season opening win this past Sunday, the 23rd-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (1-0) will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Kick-Off this weekend.
The 60-team tournament is hosted at 15 sites around the nation, one of them being Michigan, which will enter the weekend ranked No. 14 nationally. Syracuse and Denver round out the four-team event in Ann Arbor. MSU will begin play this weekend against Syracuse on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. The Bulldogs will conclude the event by taking on either Denver or the host Wolverines on Sunday.
The winners from each site this weekend advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in New Haven, Conn., Feb. 10-13, at Yale University.
"We are looking forward to this opportunity," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "It is a great tournament to be a part of and a high level test for our team."
State senior Jasmine Lee, sophomore Anastasia Rentouli and freshmen Lisa Marie Rioux and Sara Lizariturry all posted perfect marks in MSU's season opener against UAB Sunday. Due to the match being played indoors at McCarthy Gymnasium, the full Bulldog lineup was not able to see action in the opener.
The Bulldogs' fifth-ranked doubles duo of Lee and Rioux look to improve on their 9-1 mark in doubles in 2016-17, while the 27th-ranked Lee looks to notch her 55th-career singles win.
Syracuse (1-1) split its opening weekend, defeating Yale 4-3 on Saturday, before falling to Columbia 6-1 on Sunday. The Orange boast two ranked singles players in 38th-ranked Valeria Salazar and No. 99 Gabriela Knutson. The two players also combine to form the nation's 10th-ranked doubles team.
Host Michigan will see its first dual match action this weekend. The Wolverine roster includes four nationally ranked singles players and two top 30 doubles pairs. Sitting fourth in doubles are Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian and at No. 29 are Brienne Minor and Mira Ruder-Hook, who were defeated by State's Lee and Rioux in the fall.
Like the host team, Denver will see its first dual match action this weekend. In singles, UD is represented by No. 108 Bianca Mok and in doubles by the 13th-ranked duo of Julia O'Loughlin and Maureen Slattery.
