Day one saw 18 freshmen make their debut
MSU Showcases Young Talent In Birmingham
January 13, 2017 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fresh faces were scattered across the Birmingham Sportplex Friday as Mississippi State began the 2017 Indoor campaign.
A grand total of 18 freshmen made their Bulldog debut in the Blazer Invitational, and the talent was evident from the onset.
The Bulldogs demonstrated why the program has developed a strong reputation in the distance medley relay, winning the event despite the departure of All-American Brandon McBride. The youthful team of Aaron Phelps, Brian Evans, Micah Ryan and Eryk Yunk took first with a time of 10:20.57. All four participants were competing for the first time as Bulldogs.
MSU also took home first place in the 4x400m relay. The team, consisting of Juston Waters, Stephan James, Dustin James II and Joshua Willingham, ran a time of 3:14.29. The Bulldogs finished a full five seconds ahead of runner-up Alabama State (3:19.81).
Senior Leah Lott got her final season started on a good note, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.81m.
The women's relay teams also had a fantastic day, taking first and second in the DMR. The squad of Emma Tucker, Monica Mosley, Rhianwedd Price and Mia Meydrich edged out their teammates with a time of 11:45.51. The runner-up team consisted of Antonia Hehr, Kaelin Kersh, Ffion Price and Shannon Fair, and finished in 11:49.00.
"It was really great to get back out there and start to see what a lot of these kids are made of," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "This was a great start to the season for us, and I thought our freshmen really handled themselves well today. We have some things we need to tune up, but I am really excited about what this team can accomplish. We are going to get back out here tomorrow and get after it."
MSU will begin again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., competing in an additional 12 events.
