STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the final tune-up of the 2016 preseason, Maroon took down White, 3-1, in Mississippi State volleyball's annual Maroon & White Scrimmage.
Both the Maroon and White squads showcased a number of highlights on the court Monday night, as fans got their first look at the 2016 edition of the Bulldog volleyball program.
"I will say that after tonight, I'm more excited than ever for this season to begin," MSU coach David McFatrich said. "While there are some things that we need to focus on as we get closer to Friday, I thought that the team performed very well across the board. Everyone showed some flashes of greatness tonight. Now we just have to put it all together."
Maroon jumped out to a two-set lead to begin the night, taking the opening set 25-20 and the second 25-17. The White squad rebounded with a 25-20 victory in the third frame and looked to force a deciding fifth set. However, the Maroon Bulldogs took control late in the fourth and pushed ahead to a 25-15 victory, sealing the match, 3-1.
"I know the girls are excited about getting to the weekend and finally playing someone other than ourselves," McFatrich said. "Tonight was a great showing for our team, but we're ready to get out on the court on Friday and take on one of the best teams in the nation in Kansas."
Four days now stand between the Bulldogs and the Jayhawks in the season opener at Newell-Grissom. The two squads will face off on Friday, Aug. 26 with first serve set for 7 p.m. CT. The match will be live streamed on SEC Network +.
