Bulldog Volleyball Wraps Up 2016 Preseason
August 15, 2016 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Early mornings, long nights and three-a-days have been the staple of the 2016 Mississippi State volleyball preseason. On Monday, the Bulldogs closed out the 20th and final practice of the preseason at Newell-Grissom in preparation for year two of the David McFatrich era.
"This was a grind from day one with how much we asked of the girls, but I could not be more proud of how they responded to the challenge," McFatrich said. "We still have some areas we need to work on, but as a whole this preseason has made me even more excited for the upcoming season."
A total of 20 practices throughout 10 days made up the Bulldogs' preseason camp, with The Griss playing home to all but one day. The Sanderson Center was the site of the first day of preseason as The Griss was a student registration site for State's move-in day.
MSU used a mixture of individual and team drills throughout the camp, with several scrimmages as well. The second preseason for McFatrich and his staff was a step forward from last season, as the team had more time to focus on skill development instead of implementing the up-tempo style of play McFatrich has been known for.
"We are miles ahead from where we were this time last year," McFatrich said. "Instead of working on teaching the team our system, we could work on specifics of the game and improve our technique. That's a big benefit to us and it showed just by how much this team improved every day of this preseason."
The 2016 season now lies just 11 days away, as MSU will open on Friday Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. CT, against Kansas at The Griss. The Jayhawks reached the national semifinals last year, dropping a 3-1 decision to the eventual national champions Nebraska.
"The goal of our program is to always be in the mindset of getting better, to work hard each and every day to get ready for August 26. With this team I have no doubt we'll be ready to take the floor on opening night in front of our great fans and play our hearts out for Mississippi State."
