STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the 2016 campaign inching closer, the Mississippi State volleyball Bulldogs added another standout to their roster, as head coach David McFatrich announced the addition of junior transfer Jelena Vujcin on Thursday.
"We're very excited to add Jelena to our team," McFatrich said. "She adds height and great experience to our front row. She has a great arm swing and I expect her to be in the mix for playing time beginning day one. She is also a quality student-athlete who has great desire and drive to succeed both on and off the court. She's a wonderful young lady who will blend in very well team chemistry wise."
The Becej, Serbia native comes to Starkville via Seattle University, where she spent the last two seasons as a standout in the Western Athletic Conference. Vujcin reeled in a pair of WAC postseason honors in her two years, being named WAC All-Freshman Team in 2014 and WAC All-Second Team in 2015.
"I'm very excited to be joining the Mississippi State family," Vujcin said. "This team already feels like a family and the energy is off the charts. I cannot wait for this season to start because I'm so proud to be a part of this team."
This past season Vujcin was a force offensively for the Redhawks, standing seventh nationally and leading the conference with a 0.50 per set average. Her 46 total aces were good for 26th in the NCAA and led the WAC. Vujcin tallied a career-high 8 of her 46 aces against UT Rio Grande Valley on Oct. 15, which stands as the most aces in a match amongst all WAC players last season and ties for the most in a single match in SU history.
Vujcin was also an attacking threat for Seattle, as her 243 kills finished third on the team. Her attacking and serving prowess combined helped placed her sixth in the WAC with 3.55 point per set average. Vujcin also finished the season ranked third on Seattle's 2016 squad with 67.0 blocks (0.73 b/s).
The WAC All-Freshman Team honoree finished out her first season at Seattle with 21 aces (0.24 SA/S) and 179 kills (2.06 K/S), which stood second and fourth on the team, respectively.
Vujcin also has made marks in the Seattle record books, as she ranks in the top 10 in a number of categories. Her 46 aces and 0.50 average in 2015 both stand as the fourth-most in a single season in Redhawks history. Vujcin totaled 67 aces in her two seasons as a Redhawk, which stand 10th in the school's career records.
Prior to arriving at Seattle, Vujcin attended Politehnicka skola Subotica. On the club level, Vujcin played for ZOK Spartak Subotica from 2010 to 2014, helping the team finish in third place in the Wiener Stadtische Superliga in 2011 and in second place in 2012 and 2013.
Vujcin, born Nov. 13, 1995, is the daughter of Stevan and Suzana Vujcin and has an older brother, Nemanja.
