Jake Mangum Named Freshman All-American by Baseball America
June 27, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Another week means another All-America honor for freshman phenom Jake Mangum, named to Baseball America's Freshman All-America team on Monday.
The award adds to Mangum's already impressive resume, marking his sixth selection to an All-America team. To date, Mangum has been named First Team NCBWA Freshman, Second Team NCBWA, Third Team Baseball America, Louisville Slugger Freshman Team and Third Team ABCA/Rawlings.
After putting up an incredible .408 batting average as a true freshman, the SEC tabbed Mangum its SEC Freshman of the Year in May. He became the first Bulldog to take home the award in its 16-year history, and is also the first Bulldog rookie since Rafael Palmeiro in 1983 to be named to the All-SEC First Team.
In a year of unprecedented depth that saw seven Southeastern Conference teams host NCAA regionals and five host NCAA Super Regionals, Mangum recorded the best batting average in the entire league. The freshman hit .408, 22 points higher than his closest competition in Texas A&M's Boomer White (.386). Mangum finished his first campaign as the only SEC player hitting above the .400 mark.
Mangum's batting average is currently seventh in the NCAA and is first among freshmen. The feshman also stands top 10 in the SEC in on-base percentage (.458, 5th) and hits (84, 7th).
Mangum is currently playing summer ball for the Bourne Braves of the prestigious Cape Cod League, where he is hitting .353 after just eight games.
