April 23, 2016 | Track & Field
BATON ROUGE, La./CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Brandon McBride and Marta Freitas showed they are ready for the final stretch of the season, leading the Mississippi State men's and women's track and field teams at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet and Virginia Challenge, respectively.
Freitas capped a solid Saturday for MSU as she won the Virginia Challenge 1500m run with a time a 4:11.52. That mark, the third-fastest in school history, bettered her own time from the Florida Relays for tops in the nation this season.
McBride ran the 800-meter run for the first time this season, but he looked in midseason form, winning the event in Baton Rouge. McBride ran the fifth-fastest time in the nation to claim first place in 1:46.14.
He then joined Philip Smith, Juston Waters and Alfred Larry to take second place in the 4x400m relay. The quartet finished in 3:05.48, the 10th-fastest time in the country this season.
“We definitely had some good showings today,” head coach Steve Dudley said. “I thought we competed hard, and Marta and Brandon both ran well. Today really helped show us a lot as we host the Jace Lacoste Invite next weekend in our final preparation for the SEC Championship.”
Erica Bougard also had a solid day in Baton Rouge, finishing third in the invitational section of the long jump with a season-best leap of 20-07.25 that ranks in the Top 20 in the nation this year.
Bougard was the second-fastest collegian in the 100m hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 13.11. Teammate Tiffany Flynn followed in eighth, running a personal-best time of 13.47.
Bougard capped her afternoon by joining with Shayla Luckett, Kimari Martin and Alon Lewis to take third in the 4x400m relay with a 3:35.12 time that ranks third in MSU annals.
Two others claimed wins on the women's side, as Leah Lott clocked a personal-best 13.89 to win the 100m hurdles “B” section and Carly Terp captured the 1500m “B” section with a personal-best 4:48.27.
Madison Milhoan also ran her fastest 1500m time as a Bulldog, clocking 4:34.47 to take second place in the “A” section of the event.
Jaquarius Wilson took second in the “B” section of the 110m hurdles, running the fastest time of his MSU career with a 15.08.
Also on the men's side, Vince Castillo took fourth in the 400m hurdles in 52.54 after clocking a personal best with a 47.87 in an eighth-place showing in the 400m dash “B” section.
Andrew Monaghan took fourth in the 1500m run “A” section with a 3:50.80, while his brother Patrick took eighth in 3:52.15.
Branden Nosker ran a time of 15:12.23 to take third place in the 5000m run.
Ffion Price also had a stellar showing in the 1500 meters in Virginia, finishing fourth in 4:17.47. She clocked the fourth-fastest in program history and the 16th-best in the country for 2016.
Recording a season-best time of 10:00.96, Cornelia Griesche finished second in her section of Friday's 3000m steeplechase. Griesche's time ranks her in the Top 10 in the event this season. Competing alongside Griesche, Antonia Hehr ran the third-fastest time in school history, the best by a freshman, with a 10:13.49.
Shannon Fair recorded another freshman record on Friday, clocking a time of 34:51.21 in the 10,000m run to finish 12th. Running in the event for the first time, she clocked the second-best time in MSU history.
Mississippi State heads home next weekend the annual Jace LaCoste Invite at the Mike Sanders Track & Field Complex.
