
Taylor Wins First Decathlon Of The Year

MOBILE, Ala. – With a strong finish, Zachary Taylor clinched first in the decathlon scoring 6,600 points at the South Alabama Invitational.
“This was a great two days to see where our multi athletes are this point of the season,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “I'm proud of Zach and the others on their accomplishments this weekend, but there is still more to get done for them to get to the point where they need to be.”
Coming into day two in fifth place in the decathlon, Taylor ran a time of 16.14 in the 110m hurdles scoring 717 points. He threw 114-11.75 to earn 564 points in the discus. Clearing 13-01.50, Taylor captured 617 points in the pole vault. He threw 153-00 for 539 points and posted a time of 4:30.02 in the 1500m run to finish first and claim the overall win in the decathlon.
Not far behind Taylor were teammates Willie Reed in fourth with 6,319 points and Jaquarius Wilson in fifth with 6,061 points.
With a time of 14.71, Reed had the fastest time in the decathlon 110m hurdles. He earned 885 points from his time. Reed threw a personal-best 109-03 in the discus before clearing 11-09.75 in the pole vault. Collecting 379 points, Reed threw 116-09.75 in the javelin and went on to run 5:26.98 in the 1500m run.
Wilson opened day two of the decathlon clocking a time of 15.14 in the 110m hurdles earning 833 points before throwing 127-09 for 643 points in the discus. Wilson was unable to clear in the pole vault, but he went on to throw 141-08 in the javelin recording 488 points. To conclude the decathlon, Wilson ran a time of 4:51.40 to score 610 points.
Zaria Tillman concluded her first heptathlon collecting 3,532 points to finish 11th. She had a jump of 15-07 in the long jump before throwing 72-02.75 in the javelin. Tillman conclude the event scoring 621 points after clocking a time of 2:35.86 in the 800m run.
The third and final day of the South Alabama Invite will begin with Tiffany Flynn, Leah Lott and Ste'yce McNeil in the 100m hurdles at 11:30 a.m. CT. Starting action in the field Saturday will be Brianna Smith in the hammer throw at 9:30 a.m.
