Ross? Career Round Paces MSU After Day One At The Tiger Invitational
March 06, 2016 | Men's Golf
OPELIKA, ALA. – Riding a career-best round by Ross Bell, the Mississippi State men's golf team shot 294 to place them in a tie for fifth heading into Monday's second round.
Ross, the Madison, Miss. native, compiled three birdies along his way to firing a first round two-under par 70. The career-best round places him in a tie for second and two shots off the tournament's leader, Auburn's Matt Gilchrest.
The Bulldogs will enter day two tied with 25th-ranked Kentucky. Host No. 5 Auburn leads the field by five shots with a three-under par score.
“I was proud of the round that Ross gave us,” MSU coach Clay Homan said. “He got much more out of his game around the greens and was able to post one of the lowest scores in the field.”
Taylor Grant and Jacob Ross both shot rounds of 74 to tie the Bulldog duo for 28th.
Senior Ben Wood turned in a scorecard of 76, placing him in a tie for 47th heading into the second round.
Rounding out the MSU scorecard, Ben Follett-Smith shot a first round 75, tying him for 75th.
“It was a pretty good day for us on a demanding course,” Homan said. “The hole locations were challenging and there are a few holes out there where one bad swing can cost you. We had a few slip ups on the par 3s that we will need to improve on but we took a step forward today.”
The Maroon and White tee off the second round at 8:30 a.m. CT on Monday.
