Bulldog Volleyball Signs Two For 2017 Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. – With his second year in Starkville in the books, Mississippi State volleyball head coach David McFatrich announced on Wednesday the signing of two standout players for the 2017 season.
Joining the Maroon and White in 2017 will be defensive specialist Gabby Zgunda and middle blocker Laura Rose Gray. The duo comes to Starkville after impressive careers on both the high school and club scenes.
"We are very excited about our 2017 class and the great impact these players will have on our program," McFatrich said. "We feel we have added size, physicality and ball control along with strong character, commitment to excellence and competitiveness. They each have the ability to make an impact early in their careers here at Mississippi State."
A DS from Muncie, Ind., Zgunda brings a wealth of volleyball talent to the Bulldog program. Zgunda has been a force on the Indiana volleyball scene, starring on both the high school and club scenes. Under the leadership of coach Heidi Zickgraf, the Delta High School star has twice been named to the Indiana Volleyball Coaches Association All-State First Team, as well as being named First Team All-County and All-Conference.
Zgunda, who recently was named to the Indiana North All-Star Team, put together a career season in her final year with DHS, earning career highs with 445 digs (4.5 per set) and 63 assists, along with 41 aces.
Under coach Mike Lingenfelter, Zgunda has flourished on the club stage. Zgunda helped lead the Munciana Ninjas to a runner-up finish in the AAU 15 Open Gold Division in her first year. After an eighth-place finish in the AAU 16 Open Gold Division her sophomore season, Zgunda earned AAU All-American honors as she led the Munciana Aztecs to the AAU Team Final Four in the 17 Open Gold Division.
Gray, a native of Hallsville, Texas, comes to Starkville as one of the top middles in the state of Texas. The 5A All-District standout has been a dominant force for coach Cara Collum and Hallsville High School, leading the Ladycats to three-straight Class 5A District Championships. Behind Gray's dominance in the middle, HHS won the Bi-District round of the playoffs all three years as well.
Thanks to her play, Gray has landed on the 5A All-District Team from 2014-16, including First Team honors in 2015. Most recently, Gray was named the 2016 5A District Most Valuable Blocker, as well as her third-straight Ladycat Top Blocker honor.
In club play, Gray has been a member of the East Texas Juniors 18 Black team, led by head coach Ronda Shirley.
Each signee will be featured on HailState.com over the next three weeks, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 14.
