Rhianwedd Price placed 32nd to grab All-American honors for the second time in her career
Bulldogs Conclude Historic Season with Highest Finish in Program History
November 19, 2016 | Cross Country
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – For the second-straight year, Mississippi State cross country will end the season with its highest ranking in school history.
The Bulldogs finished 15th overall, which bests last year's 17th place showing to mark two consecutive years MSU has finished inside the Top 20 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
After putting together one of the best races in school history, MSU finished higher than any other program in the Southeastern Conference. In total, the South Region Champion Bulldogs beat three other Regional Champions. It was the first time in school history that MSU bested perennial powerhouse and South Central Region Champion Arkansas, who placed 19th. MSU finished just ahead of Midwest Region Champion Missouri, who placed 16th, while Mid Atlantic Region Champion Penn State placed 18th.
"Going into the year, our main objective was to be better than we were last year," MSU coach Houston Franks said. "Last year was great; this year was even better. One of the things that makes the ending so special is that we did have some tribulations and some up and downs. We fought through those things and every week somebody different stepped up and carried the torch. It wasn't until the last few weeks of the year that everything finally came together. It sure was fun when that happened. It was pretty special for everyone to put it together down the stretch when it counted."
In the final cross country race of her career, senior Rhianwedd Price placed 32nd and recorded 25 points to grab All-America honors for the second time in her career. The award marks the third-consecutive season the Bulldogs have had a runner named All-American, with Price in 2014 followed by Marta Freitas in 2015.
Just behind Price was her sister Ffion, who grabbed 51 points in 66th place after running the 6K event in 20:38.8. Junior Mia Meydrich placed third for MSU and 132nd overall, garnering 104 points after running 20:58.2.
Since 2013, the Mississippi State track & field program has seen 10 Top 20, seven Top 15 and three Top 10 finishes at NCAA Championships. The 2017 Indoor track & field season will begin in January, as the program looks to continue to build on its unprecedented success.
