No. 29 Cross Country Prepares For SEC Championships
October 27, 2016 | Cross Country
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Championship season has arrived for No. 29 Mississippi State cross country.
Last season, the Bulldogs exited a rain-soaked Texas A&M course with 95 points and a program-best 2nd place finish. Five of the eight members of that squad return this season, and bring with them even higher aspirations.
"I think we are going to be in the mix to win it," MSU coach Houston Franks said. "We were second last year, and we are going to go into this race with the mindset that we are going to try to win our first SEC Championship. Last year was a groundbreaking performance for us, and it was really a springboard performance for our program."
Five of the eight athletes that helped guide MSU to their highest finish in school history will take the course tomorrow. Senior Rhianwedd Price has paced MSU in three of four meets so far in 2016, and was the team's third-highest finisher at SEC Championships last season.
Mia Meydrich, Ffion Price, Shannon Fair and Antonia Hehr also competed in the SEC Championships last season, while Stephanie Peterson, Carly Terp, Emma Tucker, Kristy Terp and Alex Wallace will get their first taste of the Arkansas cross country course.
"During races in the past, and during this race, I think the mindset is basically to be relentless," sophomore Shannon Fair said. "That is a word that is used a lot in Mississippi State athletics, but it is true. You have to think of all the hard work you have put in, and push through it."
This will be MSU's fifth meet of the season, and will provide the Bulldogs their biggest opportunity of the year.
"From the beginning of the summer really until now is all about preparing for this part of the year," Franks said. "The difference between the first team in the SEC and the seventh or eighth is going to be pretty minimal. Women's cross country this year is probably the deepest the SEC has ever been."
No. 29 MSU will be joined by host-school No. 10 Arkansas and No. 16 Ole Miss.
