Cross Country Prepares For Final Race Of Regular Season
October 14, 2016 | Cross Country
Terre Haute, Ind. – It's the final week of the regular season, which brings with it the toughest test to date for the Mississippi State women's cross country team.
The 2016 Bulldogs will get their first taste of the LaVerne Gibson Cross Country Course during Saturday's Pre-Nationals, an event in which MSU earned a Top-5 finish last year. The site will also play host to NCAA Championships in just over five weeks. Last season, MSU made its first appearance at the NCAA Championships in team history while finishing a program-best 17th overall.
A total of 68 teams will be competing in the Pre-Nationals Saturday, including eight teams ranked inside the USTFCCCA's Top-30. The event can be seen live on FloTrack.com, beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
"This is a great opportunity on a national scale," MSU coach Houston Franks said. "This is a chance to run against literally the best teams in the country. We did really well in this race last season, finishing fifth overall. That performance really helped propel us into the postseason and our first NCAA Championship appearance."
The MSU men were in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Friday to compete in the Crimson Classic where they earned 488 points and placed 19th out of the 24 teams that competed. The team was paced by freshman Stephen Jones, who ran the 8K event in a time of 26:05.2 to finish 64th overall.
"We are a month out from the regional meet," Franks said. "and we need to get a lot better in the next month before it gets here. This was not a good performance, and we have some work to do before then."
