STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State junior left-hander Vance Tatum threw three scoreless innings as Maroon picked up a 7-1 win against Gray Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The five-inning exhibition marked MSU's second scrimmage of the preseason.
Tatum picked up the win with three strikeouts, walking none and surrendering just one hit. Also having shutout outings were junior right-hander Reid Humphreys, junior righty Logan Elliot and freshman lefty Jared Padgett.
True freshman outfielder Jake Mangum (2 for 3, SB) started the scoring with a two-out single through the right side in the bottom of the second. The base hit allowed redshirt freshman Cole Gordon (2 for 2) and true freshman Hunter Stovall (1 for 3) to score.
Leading 2-0 in the home half of the third, Maroon extended its lead to 5-0 with a three-run inning. Following a leadoff single through the four hole by junior Cody Brown (1 for 3), junior Gavin Collins (1 for 3) launched a two-run home run over the Left Field Lounge. Gordon then singled, went to second on an error and then scored on another defensive miscue.
Gray scored its only run of the game in the fourth with a two-out RBI single by junior Luke Reynolds (1 for 2), before Maroon finished off the scoring with runs scored by freshman Elih Marrero (1 for 2) and Mangum.
