Freitas Claims Second, Team Finishes Third
September 19, 2015 | Cross Country
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Marta Freitas was stellar in her Mississippi State cross country debut, capturing second place overall to help her squad to a third-place finish at Saturday's Commodore Classic in Nashville.
“I'm very pleased with the women's performance,” MSU coach Houston Franks said. “It was a deep field today with several ranked teams. I thought we competed well and worked well. Now we have to turn around and go to Virginia next week and continue to work strong.”
Freitas ran a time of 17:02.20 to pace the Bulldogs.
Junior Lisa Ziegler ran a personal-best 17:20.30 to follow Freitas in 10th. Senior Cornelia Griesche brought home 14th place and third for the Bulldogs after running a time of 17:28.90.
Mia Meydrich earned 35th in a time of 17:49.30, while Shannon Fair ran 18:00.60 to claim 47th and fifth for MSU.
Freshman Antonia Herh competed for the first time this season, finishing 81st in a time of 18:24.80. Madison Milhoan clocked in at 19:11.40 to finish 140th, while Kristy Terp ran 19:45.10 to finish 179th.
With a strong fight, senior Mathew Dunn finished 30th to capture the first spot in MSU men's Top 5. He ran a time of 25:36.40, leading his team to 10th-place finish with 243 points.
“We have a lot to work on,” Franks said. “Our young guys have to learn to put full races together. There's a learning curve from high school 5K to a college 8K, but we have to get better in a hurry.”
Finishing closely behind Dunn in MSU's No. 2 spot, freshman Emilio Perco placed 37th overall with a time of 25:48.50 in his Bulldog debut.
“I'm extremely pleased with how Emilio ran today,” Franks said. “Being his first 5K I thought he had a very strong performance on the course.”
Senior Andrew Monaghan ran a 25:58.80 to finish 47th overall and third for the Maroon and White, while his brother Patrick Monaghan finished 68th after running a time of 26:23.40.
Rounding out MSU's Top 5 was Curtis Kelly in 70th place with a time of 26:26.60.
Also competing for the men's squad was Branden Nosker (75th, 26:31.00), JT Mackay (94th, 26:42.90), Tristan Orman (97th, 26:47.00), Pierce Rose, (113th, 27:04.30), Quintin Reiser (129th, 27:26.90) Zachary Weaver (153rd, 27:45.70) and Caden Foos (166th, 28:21.80).
