
Women?s Cross Country Surprises Teams With Fifth-Place Finish

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Competing in the toughest meet of the season, the Mississippi State women's team posted a fifth-place finish at the Pre-NCAA meet.
Scoring 247 points in the seeded race, the Bulldogs were only three points behind fourth-place finisher No. 9 Stanford. Michigan, ranked 5th nationally, won with 131 points. A total of 45 teams competed.
MSU beat ranked opponents No. 7 Georgetown, No. 26 Villanova, No. 27 Texas and No. 29 Cornell. The Bulldogs were also the top SEC team, outscoring Missouri, Kentucky and Georgia,
“It was a great performance (Saturday),” MSU coach Houston Franks said. “We ran with a lot of toughness. Going in we knew we had a chance to finish well in a field like this, and we were able to take out some ranked teams, which we needed to do.”
Out of 311 runners, senior Marta Freitas captured 12th place overall. Competing in her first 6K, she finished with a time of 20:15.20.
Junior Rhianwedd Price placed 14th at 20:17.70. Finishing third for MSU, Cornelia Griesche finished 69th, clocking a time of 20:57.70.
In her second meet for MSU, Ffion Price ran 21:02.60 to finish fourth for MSU and 82nd overall.
Placing 86th, sophomore Mia Meydrich recorded a personal-best 21:03.00 to bring home 86th place.
Finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, for MSU were junior Lisa Ziegler and freshman Shannon Fair. Ziegler recorded a time of 21:07.40 to finish 97th, while Fair posted a time of 21:21.60 to place 137th.
The last time MSU competed in this meet was 2007 in Terre Haute, Ind., when the team finished 33rd overall.
Also competing was Antonia Hehr and Madison Milhoan in the women's open race. Hehr placed ninth with a time of 21:42.30, while Milhoan finished 78thclocking a time of 23:15.60, respectively.
Up next for the Maroon and White is the SEC Championships in College Station on Oct. 30.
“Hopefully we will get quality points out of it. We need to stay aggressive,” Franks said. “Today's race was a good confidence builder of putting a race together at a quality meet.”
