
Thompson Finishes Third At Nationals

EUGENE, Ore. – Ending his freshman season on the national stage, Curtis Thompson placed third in the javelin with a throw of 247-05 to earn six points for Mississippi State at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at Hayward Field.
Thompson qualified for the finals with a throw of 243-05.
“It feels great to end my freshman the year this way,” Thompson said. “It's great to be here and even better to place."
Junior Brandon McBride will have the opportunity to defend his title in the 800m run after posting a time of 1:47.28 to finish first in his heat and fifth overall. The finals will be held on Friday at 7:50 p.m. CT.
The men's 4x400m relay team comprised of McBride, Jovan Davis, Scottie Hearn and Alfred Larry ran a time of 3:05.15 to qualify for Friday's finals in the event. The team finished fourth overall.
Multi athletes Erica Bougard and Zachary Taylor kicked off the meet with the heptathlon and decathlon.
First up for Bougard in the heptathlon was the 100m hurdles. With the third-best time in the event, she ran a time of 13.12 to score 1,106 points. Bougard went on to clear 6-00.50 in the high jump, just short of her personal-best 6-00.75. She had the second-best clearance in the event to score 1,029 points.
After the high jump, Bougard threw 34-05 in the shot put to capture 562 points. The last event of the day for the heptathlon was the 200m dash. The Byahlia, Miss., native ran the fourth-best time in the event of 23.63 in the event to score 1,017 points. At the conclusion of Day 1, Bougard sits in fourth place with a score of 3,714 points.
Sophomore Zachary Taylor made his NCAA Championship debut in the decathlon. He ran the fastest time of the day in the 100m dash to score 938 points with a time of 10.66. With a personal-best leap of 23-02.50, Taylor scored 830 points in the long jump. He scored 535 points in the shot put after a throw of 35-06.
In the high jump, Taylor cleared 6-01.50 scoring 687 points. Taylor ran a time of 48.70 in the 400m run to finish in fifth overall, capturing 876 points. With 3,866 points at the end of Day 1, Taylor sits in 14th place going into the final five events.
Falling just one spot short of making the finals, Hearn finished ninth in the 400m hurdles with a time 50.29.
Also seeing his season come to an end was Alfred Larry, who ran a time of 46.19 in the 400m dash Wednesday to place 11th overall the prelims.
With the conclusion of Day 1, the women take the stage tomorrow starting with Rhianwedd Price and Marta Freitas in the 1500m run at 4:14 p.m.
