EUGENE, Ore. – Multi athlete Erica Bougard ended the heptathlon with a fourth-place finish earning the first points for the Mississippi State women's team Thursday at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
Bougard scored a total of 6,050 points in the event to earn her fourth-place victory along with five teams points.
“Erica worked hard yesterday and today with very few breaks,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “I'm very proud of her for what she's accomplished this season. She still has to compete Saturday and thankfully she has a day of rest.”
Prepared to compete in three heptathlon events on Day 2, Bougard kicked off the day with the heptathlon long jump, where she finished third in the event with a leap of 20-10.75 to score 965 points. In the javelin, Bougard threw 111-04 to earn 552 points in the event. Capturing 819 points in the 800m run, she ran a time of 2:20.35, Bougard earned 6,050 points to earn fourth overall.
With the completion of the heptathlon, Bougard went on to compete in the 100m hurdles where she placed 15th with a time of 13.19, unable to qualify for the finals. Bougard will be back to compete in the high jump on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT.
Both Rhianwedd Price and Marta Freitas will compete in Saturday's 1500m finals after finishing first and second in their heats Thursday night. Running the best time in the event, Price ran a time of 4:16.01 to qualify, while Freitas ran 4:17.01 to finish fourth overall.
Finishing Day 2 of the decathlon, Zachary Taylor placed 13th with 7,376 points. To start the second day, Taylor ran a time of 15.32 in the 110m hurdles. He had the 14th-best time overall and scored 811 points. He went on to throw 117-07 in the discus to capture 581 points before clearing 13-05.25 in the pole vault to score 645 points.
Taylor threw a personal-best 184-04 in the javelin, the sixth best in the event. In the final event, he ran the third-best time of 4:22.91 in the 1500m run to finish 13th.
Competing in the 3000m steeplechase for the second year in a row in the championships, Cornelia Griesche ran a time of 10:19.36 to place 16th, ending her season.
“All the athletes fought to finish strong today,” Dudley said. “A few athletes we thought would qualify didn't, but we still have the opportunity to finish high as a team. We've still got lots to do this weekend.”
The women's 4x400m relay team comprised of Kimari Martin, Ste'yce McNeil, Ocian Archer and Shayla Luckett ran a time of 3:35.48 to finish 11, falling short of qualifying for the finals.
