May 17, 2015 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Entering the 400m hurdles, Scottie Hearn was ranked second in the SEC. With the SEC Track & Field Championships now in the books, he's No. 1.
After running a time of 50.43 in the preliminaries on Thursday, the junior standout had the third-best time in the event and a win from his heat. In the finals on Saturday, Hearn ran a personal-best 49.39 en route to claiming top honors, tying the school record.
“It feels great to be an SEC champion, especially to win at home,” Hearn said. “I've been waiting on this since freshman year and it finally happened.”
Both Bulldog teams placed eighth in the championships. The men's team scored 52 points, while the women had the highest finish in school history with 51 points.
Overall, Arkansas claimed the women's title, while Florida won the men's crown.
“We had some huge moments,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “A lot of athletes stepped up this weekend. We had some missed opportunities, two rain delays, but I'm so proud of how well all these athletes competed.”
Competing alongside Hearn was Jovan Davis, who placed fifth with a personal-best time of 50.14. After running 58.52, Ste'yce McNeil earned a sixth-place finish on the women's side.
Placing second and third in the 1500m run, Rhianwedd Price ran a time of 4:18.32 while Marta Freitas had a personal-best of 4:19.38. Together the two brought in 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Freitas went on to place seventh in the 800m run with a time of 2:07.67, while Price finished ninth at 2:13.81. Brandon McBride finished second in the event with a time of 1:46.43, which help sealed six points for the men's team.
